Hello, my name is Melanie, and I am a Registered Provisional Psychologist in good standing with the College of Alberta Psychologists. I hold a Master of Counseling Degree from City University, a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology, and a Diploma in Correctional Services from MacEwan University.
Therapy for Children. Teens, & Parents
In my work with children and adolescents, I utilize a combination of play therapy, sand-based therapy, as well as other therapeutic modalities such as Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to address a range of challenges including, but not limited to, emotional regulation, behavioural regulation, self-esteem, confidence, anxiety/worry, bullying, depression, academic difficulties, and neurodivergence (such as ADHD). I ensure to provide a safe space for children and teens to explore their emotions, process their experiences and learn positive coping skills allowing them to be the best version of themselves.
I prioritize forming a collaborative partnership with both the parents and the child to establish the most effective goals to strive towards. Involving parents in therapy is crucial for ensuring the child receives support at home to facilitate the necessary changes for personal growth. By working together as a cohesive unit, families can strengthen their bond and enhance overall functionality.
Therapy for Adults, Couples & Families
Prior to my current role as a psychologist, I have had the opportunity to work in various positions that allowed me to assist individuals in different capacities. This includes experience in the correctional services system as a living unit officer, where I focused on facilitating residents’ reintegration into society and developing de-escalation and safety skills. I also worked as a home assessor conducting SAFE assessments for families seeking kinship, adoption, or foster care status. Additionally, I provided counseling services for the Chrysalis Network, a national human trafficking hotline, offering support, safety planning, and trauma counselling.
In my current professional practice with adults, I offer support for those dealing with issues such as grief, trauma, family conflicts, neurodiversity (such as ADHD), depression, anxiety, and relationship challenges. I believe in customizing my therapeutic approach to meet each client’s unique needs and circumstances. I utilize a variety of therapeutic techniques, including Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Mindfulness. When working with couples I incorporate interventions from the Gottman Method, Attachment-Based Therapy, Psychodynamic and Trauma-Informed Therapy. My approach to therapy is collaborative and eclectic, with a focus on finding the most effective strategies to help my clients achieve positive outcomes while minimizing disruption to their daily lives.

Counselling for Adults
My therapeutic approach is rooted in compassion, with a modern and scientific spin on mindfulness to guide you in processing emotions and coping with anxiety and stress. The fundamentals of positive neuroplasticity inspire me to support others in finding hope and creating a new internal reality.

A Bit About Me
When I’m not in therapist mode, you’ll probably find me hanging out with friends, family, or my pup! I’m passionate about holistic wellness and taking in all the beauty life has to offer. Whether that means strength training, yoga, or enjoying whatever outdoor sport the season brings. I’ve recently gotten into golf, I love to ski when winter hits, and I thoroughly enjoy festival season during the summer! I also love to cook and host; there’s nothing better than good food, music, and belly laughs with loved ones. That said, I’m equally content curled up at home with reality TV as my not-so-guilty pleasure!

Welcome! I’m Heather Tomnuk, and I am a Master’s Level Counselling Intern Therapist at Solace Psychology & Wellness. I am currently completing my Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology through Yorkville University and have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Alberta. For the past 13 years I have worked as a Registered Nurse with an array of individuals in varying environments, including mental health, addictions and emergency. These experiences solidified the idea that everyone has their own battles (internal and external) that they are struggling with, which increased my awareness of being present, respectful, and nonjudgmental to those I interact with.
Therapy for Children, Teens, Adults, Couples & Families
I enjoy working with all populations. When working with adults, I build rapport to ensure they feel heard and seen, particularly when struggling with mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, trauma or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Additionally, these skills help when working with children and teens who are struggling with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and anxiety. My aim is to help clients gain self-awareness surrounding their unique journey so they can draw upon their abilities and existing resources to better cope with challenges including self-esteem, relationship conflicts, life transitions, and stress.
I tend to follow the Person-Centered Approach, but because I understand that everyone is unique, and what works for one person may not work for another, I will integrate aspects of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT), and Mindfulness. When working with children, I incorporate play, sandtray and art-based modalities to keep sessions engaging and lighthearted.
I believe that I create a safe space for individuals through values of empathy, compassion, respect, nonjudgment, curiosity, and patience. And in this space, I aim to form collaborative relationships with trust and openness so that clients feel valued, free to reflect, and free to explore their challenges or barriers.
I understand that life is not easy. There are many obstacles that arise that we feel unprepared for, or that make us question our strength and our abilities. Changes also occur, whether we wanted them or not; This is something I continue to learn- the only constant in this world is change- so you are not alone. I am honored to help you on this journey!
A Bit About Me!
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with friends and family (often at a play place or kid friendly event so I can spend time with my son and niece) and completing DIY projects around the home. I also enjoy spending time outdoors. I was fortunate to live on the East coast and loved the Bay of Fundy- the fluctuating tide where you could walk on the ocean floor, and the beautiful hiking trails by Alma.

My specialties lie within providing individual counselling to adolescents, their parents, and individual adults. I also enjoy facilitating workshops directed to adolescents, teachers, and parents on topics such as parenting and social skills.
I see every client as an expert in themselves with the potential to keep growing and achieving their personal goals at any stage of their life. Therefore, I am passionate about helping clients find their strength and potential, and work towards a healthier mental state. My focus is to find the best approach and tools based on each client’s needs in a safe and non-judgmental space, bringing empathy, compassion, and genuineness. As an immigrant from Peru, I also recognize and value the importance of what makes us who we are and the importance of where we come from. I am fluent in both English and Spanish.
I specialize in helping people cope with anxiety, depression, trauma, returning to work (RTW), stress management, and life changes. I also enjoy helping individuals achieve higher self-esteem and confidence as well as greater overall well-being, allowing you to reach your life goals.
When working with you, I may use tools from different therapeutic modalities such as: Person-Centered Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), and mindfulness.

Therapy for Adults and Seniors
I am passionate about providing a safe and supportive environment for clients to navigate life’s challenges while fostering self-compassion to build resilience and enhance overall well-being. Having experienced my own therapeutic journey, I understand the courage it takes to seek help. I strive to be an empathetic and compassionate companion, walking beside you on your path to healing.
My desire to become a therapist was inspired by my personal experiences as well as my work within the healthcare system. I specialize in working with adults and seniors on managing anxiety, stress, depression, relationship challenges, life transitions, Borderline Personality Disorder, complex trauma, and adjusting to both acute and chronic illnesses. With extensive experience in an acute care hospital, I am also passionate about supporting healthcare professionals and caregivers who face unique challenges such as burnout and compassion fatigue.
In my practice, I integrate tools from various therapeutic modalities, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (CBT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT), Person-Centered Therapy (PCT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Narrative Therapy, and Mindfulness. I describe my approach as humanistic, eclectic, engaging, and interactive.
A Bit About Me
I am inherently curious and love expanding my knowledge and skills through continuous learning. Most recently, I attended a four-day global mental health and trauma conference in the UK, which combined two of my passions: travel and learning. Outside of therapy, I have a deep interest in European history and architecture, enjoy baking, photography, and reading. My favorite season is fall, and I love walking through the leaves and savoring the cool weather with a pumpkin spice latte in hand.
